The Emergency Communications Division is one of the most vital services for the City and County Police, Fire, and EMS Departments. It also serves as the critical link between the residents and visitors to Ashland County in need, and Responder Personnel. The 911 Dispatchers who work in the Communications Division provide emergency and non-emergency dispatching service for all of Ashland County on a 24 hour basis.

Ashland County Dispatchers are responsible for answering emergency (911) and non-emergency calls in a calm and supportive voice while attempting to obtain as much essential information as possible. Police Officers, Firefighters, and EMS crews responding to emergency calls rely on detailed information provided by the Communications Division. The Dispatcher is responsible for entering the information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System as the information is received while verifying the location of the caller. Information is continually updated as additional information is received or the call is terminated.  Emergency Communications employs six full time 911-Dispatchers and several part-time Dispatchers under the general supervision of the Communications Director.

Ashland County 911 Dispatchers are responsible for dispatching Police, Fire and EMS services to the cities of Ashland, Mellen, Glidden, the Village of Butternut, Bad River Reservation, and all areas in between, including the town of La Pointe.

The Communications Division operates and maintains Ashland County's Public Safety Answering Point, also referred to as a PSAP, located in the City of Ashland. The Communications Division also helps maintain the rural addressing functions, and many county-wide Public Safety radio communications networks, along with 911 phone systems.  These elements combine to form the "Ashland County 911 Communications System", which provides coordinated Law Enforcement, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services to all Ashland County residents.
